Located in the eastern Caribbean between Guadeloupe and Martinique, Roseau is the capital of Dominica, a small, beautiful island nation known for its lush rainforest, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Cruise ships typically dock at the Roseau Cruise Port, conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from downtown. From here, cruise passengers can explore the vibrant streets of the city, which are lined with colorful buildings, restaurants, and shops. Popular attractions include the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven, Fort Young Hotel, and the Central Market. Nature lovers can find plenty to enjoy in the surrounding area, such as the nearby Trafalgar Falls and Boiling Lake, or take a scenic drive up to the Cabrits National Park to see the volcanic crater Lake Boeri.

There are just two different seasons, a dry and wet season, with the dry season running generally from December through to April and the wet season from May through to November. To reach Roseau and Dominica, therefore it’s necessary to transit through other nearby Caribbean Islands. Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Martinique to name just a few, all have connections onto Dominica, and from there, it’s possible to fly further afield to more international destinations such as North America and Europe. Dominica is a small island nation located in the eastern Caribbean, with the islands of Guadeloupe found to the north and Martinique lying to the south. Today, the market has found new life though as a center of arts and crafts on the island, showcasing local goods and giving traders and craftspeople a place to sell their unique cultural creations.

There are no MPH signs on the island, but go slower, just as you would in any unfamiliar location. The roads are winding and narrow and littered with potholes, so it can be a difficult drive. Driving is on the left side of the road, the use of horns is expected frequently, and if you’re leaving the city, make sure the gas tank is full as gas stations are few and far between.

It is a great spot for relaxation and exploration, with a variety of activities to choose from. Still, one of the better options is the black sand Mero Beach in the village of Mero.

Dominica is a hotbed of geothermal activity- it’s all those volcanos, in the style of a tropical Iceland– so the island is teeming with hot springs and mud baths. Apparently they’re renowned for their healing minerals, and they truly are relaxing, however be prepared for the pungent sulphur pong that rises with the tufts of steam from the water. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from in Dominica, but alas- for our most recent Caribbean season, we always docked in Roseau on a Sunday when the city was much, much quieter than usual. There’s a good supermarket with a pharmacy upstairs just two minutes from the cruise pier, and there’s free wifi in port. Located a 10-minute walk from the harbour and comprising 50 species of trees and its famous bus embedded in the trunk of a tree.

Because of its proximity to the cruise port, it is popular among passengers who enjoy its fun, unique atmosphere and great music. In order to rent a car in Dominica, you are required to be at least 25 years old with a minimum of 2 years driving experience, and you have to obtain a local driving permit which will cost approximately $12 USD. Most roads are paved, but driving can be tricky with steep and narrow roads.
This island might just be my favourite Caribbean nation, thanks to its super-friendly people, relaxed vibe, and utterly captivating and wild scenery. It’s definitely a place that I’d love to explore at my own pace, without the time restrictions of living and working on a cruise ship; but for now, this is a downright brilliant start. Other destinations like the Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda and Aruba, are known for their stunning picture-perfect beaches, but Dominica doesn’t have so many of these. What it does have, is thick rainforests, dramatic gorges and bubbling hot springs, stunning volcanic peaks- nine volcanos, to be exact- and some incredible diving spots. The adjacent to the cruise pier street has an outdoor market, shops and restaurants. There are many, many diving spots around the island; but you don’t have to go far to find the closest one.

The National Park is named after its highest mountain, Morne Trois Pitons, meaning mountain of three peaks. Features within the part include the Valley of Desolation, a region of boiling mud ponds and small geysers; the Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Emerald Pool. The best time to go to Dominica is April during the dry season (which isn’t that dry) for a combination of low risk of rain and warmer temperatures.
Roseau is said to offer the best fruit and vegetable market in the Caribbean. A few excursions that take visitors only to Mero Beach usually cost less than $50. Otherwise, some island tours include Mero Beach along with other stops such as Salton Waterfalls, the sulphur springs at Wotten Waven and the baths at Ti Kwen Glo Cho.
The “Island of Nature,” as it is known, has several acres of rainforest, 12 major waterfalls and 172 species of birds. Champagne Beach & Reef – On the southwest coast of the island, and closest to Roseau, this beach gets its name from volcanic vents that release bubbles from fissures in the ocean floor. You will need swimming shoes here, as there are more pebbles than there is sand.

Roseau is laid out in an easy to navigate grid system with many of the tourist facilities clustered around the cruise ship dock; the tourist office and Old Market are close by. The heart of downtown Roseau is just yards away from the cruise port.
This is another experience that I was desperate to book in Dominica, but either never had the time to do, or it was booked up when I was free. But it was so well-recommended to me that I’d book it up in an instant when I return. For something a bit more chilled, because I fully appreciate that hurling yourself down rapids and into ravines might not be everybody’s cup of tea, make sure you spend time at one of the island’s hot springs.
Dominica is a great place to go for ecotourism adventures such as hiking and whitewater rafting. It isn’t the place to go for beaches because they are mostly rocky from past volcanic activity. One worthy attraction in the city is the Dominica Botanic Gardens, which are less than 10 minutes away by foot from the cruise terminal along King George V Street. The gardens stretch over 40 acres and display more than 50 types of plants and trees.
Roseau is a colorful West Indian capital, its streets lined with old stone-and-wood buildings. Taxis, minibuses, and tour operators are available at the berths. The island has a rainforest climate, and receives, on average, 197 inches of rain per year. The driest months of the year are January through April, but short, midday showers are still common. The Rainforest Tram offers a view of the rainforest without the strenuous hiking.
You can get a taxi from the port in about half an hour, although the price will differ depending on how many people are in your group. The views from the top are stunning, and it was lovely to head down through the outskirts of the city back to the harbour. Just wave to the driver for the bus to stop to allow you to board. Kallaloo House is open for a casual breakfast and lunch and they have daily specials including Roti, BBQ and Soups. They are affiliated with The Great Old House, a fine dining restaurant located 3 minutes from the cruise pier, but they are only open for dinner. This historic cobbled square was a former slave market, and today is a straw market that has vegetables and crafts and souvenirs.
